Emergency Department Design and Planning: A Case Study
With the help of Exigence, St. Joseph Hospital finished construction of a new $10 million emergency department. This 17,000 square-foot facility brings the latest advancements in emergency care to a community hospital setting. Under the direction of Dr. Frank Lee, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Exigence, the on-site staff from Exigence undertook a massive consultation and assessment project aimed at increasing revenues and efficiency in the ED. Exigence was called upon because of our expertise in process, selection and design of emergency department facilities and equipment. The entire ED was designed and built based on recommendations from Exigence staff working in partnership with hospital administrators. They began the process by breaking down every course of action and interaction into individual steps. They timed each process and procedure. Exigence then identified and removed bottlenecks and inefficiencies until each process and procedure was flawlessly efficient. Exigence also worked closely with hospital administration to select an electronic medical record (EMR) system, using their extensive knowledge of information systems to make appropriate recommendations. As a result of the ED redesign, volume is up over 35 percent at St. Joseph Hospital. Revenues have also increased as a result of an improved reputation in the community, fewer walkouts and improved performance and quality benchmarks. Exigence is currently partnering with Mercy Hospital of Buffalo on a $30 million capital project to create an emergency department that will be a model for future delivery of healthcare. |
